Introduction:
Before I started college, I was so nervous about how hard college can be. Some people would say that college is just like high school. Some would say that college is like a place you wish you want to get out of. Some would even say that college is the next step of your brand-new life. But once college came, I never felt so scared for my life. But all of that changed when I started taking one of my requirement classes. That class is called Writing for Engineers. Let’s see what I did in that class that made me change the way I feel about college.
Resume & Cover Letter:
During my time in Writing for Engineers class, my professor wanted the students, including me, to create a resume and a cover letter. He wanted us to create a resume and a cover letter because he wanted us to be ready for wanting any job opportunities that are based on our major. He also wanted us to talk about ours to those who would want to read about us and to find an internship that could be good for us and our resumes. So, I created a resume, that explains: who I am, my skills, and my experiences. For my closing letter, it explains about what I have done in my experiences. After completing this assignment, I have got an 8.6 as my grade. I have got this grade because I have made some errors on my resume and my cover letter. But, based on this assignment, I came out feeling ready for what life throws at me because it gives me away to express myself and get ready for a job opportunity. I have learned that I must be organized with my resume and understand what I am writing and be confident when trying to apply for a job.
Interview Report:
On our next assignment, my professor wanted us to interview a person who is any type of engineer or a computer scientist. The purpose for this interview was to learn how you are supposed to interview a person and to be professional and to be confident while interviewing a person. Well, what I did was interview a civil engineering or a surveyor from the company NY Geomatics. I asked good questions for this person to answer and wrote down notes that was helpful for this interview. I even went to this engineer’s work site to understand how civil engineers work. After completing this assignment, I have got 13/15 as my grade. I got this grade because I have made some errors on my writing. But based on this assignment, I have learned about how to be confident and professional when interviewing a person. I have also learned that being civil engineer requires a lot of work and that I can never make things personal, just business. This assignment made me more professional when doing work like this.
Lab Report:
On our next assignment, my professor wanted us to write a lab report on an experiment. The experiment I am talking about is to explain the probability of a rolling dice. In this experiment, we had to roll two pairs of dice 100 times and calculate the probability for us to write our lab reports. It was tricky when trying to find the probability of the rolling dice but I could make a chart for my calculations and results in this report. After completing this assignment, I did ok on this assignment, since it was my first time on writing a lab report. I had a 8.2 as my grade. But I have learned how to be able to calculate the probability of a certain object and how to be able to write a lab report.
Group Proposal:
On our next assignment, my professor wanted us to create a group proposal. In other words, he wanted us to work in a group of 4 people and create a proposal project on what needs to be improve in our college site, CCNY. So, I joined a group called Leak Patrol. We work together on certain aspects of the project to create a proposal presentation. Our proposal explains on how we can improve the leaking problems in our college site. It also explains what the leaking problems can lead to if they are not solved. After explaining our proposal, I have learned those most valuable lesson during this proposal. That lesson is teamwork. To explain and complete a project is to work well with others and talk over what can be beneficial and what could be a problem. I am independent when doing work, but I more confident doing work with a team. We did well on our proposal.
Technical Description:
On our last assignment, my professor wanted us to create our own technical description of an existing project. In other words, research an existing project and learn about its history and how it benefits the world. This technical description had to be a two-sided page. So, I researched specific projects that were worked on by civil engineers. After minutes of researching, I found the most perfect project that was worked on by civil engineers. That project was The Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge is located between San Francisco and Marin County, CA. When doing this assignment, I have explained the facts about this bridge and how the civil engineers worked on this project back in the 1900s. After completing this assignment, I have learned about how civil engineers worked on their projects back then when there wasn’t any technology and how to become confident when discussing or presenting my research to my class.
Assignment:
Besides all the assignments we have done, we also have done certain activities throughout this semester. The certain activities we have done was figuring out how to use a comma, colon, and/or semicolon in a sentence. We also learned about how to shorten long sentences. We even learned how to use specific arguments when writing our activities. We even had a quest on the activities we have done. I got a 96 as my grade for that quest. I was so proud of myself.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I was so afraid of what life would throw at me before I went to college. I was afraid that I was going to suffer and fail. But once I was in college, I have become somewhat confident due to a requirement class I had to take. That requirement class was Writing for Engineers. This class gave me a way to learn new things and become more confident due to the activities and assignments we had to do. It is important to know about this stuff because it can give people a way to figure how what they want to do in life and how to get to that goal.
